Are Bamboo Bed Sheets Good? Here's What Reddit Actually Says

A
r/AusBedroom
Are bamboo bed sheets actually good or is it just marketing hype?
I've slept on cotton my entire life (currently on some Sheridan 1000TC set). Keep seeing bamboo sheets everywhere – ads, influencers, even my sister won't shut up about hers.

Are they actually better than cotton? Or is it one of those things where you're paying for the trend? I sleep hot and my cotton sheets feel clammy by 3am. Genuinely curious what the difference is.

Anyone made the switch? Regret it or love it?

I work in textiles (not for any sheet brand). Let me break this down properly because there's a LOT of misinformation:

Bamboo vs Cotton – the actual differences:

  • Temperature regulation – Bamboo viscose is 3x more breathable than cotton. The fibre structure has micro-gaps that wick moisture away from your body. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it (that's your clammy feeling at 3am).
  • Softness – Bamboo feels like a cross between silk and cashmere. Even cheap bamboo sheets are softer than most high-TC cotton. They also get SOFTER with every wash, whereas cotton gets rougher.
  • Durability – This is where it gets nuanced. Good bamboo sheets last 3-5 years with proper care. Cotton can last longer (5-7 years) but feels worse over time.
  • Thread count – Doesn't matter as much with bamboo. A 400TC bamboo sheet feels softer than a 1000TC cotton. The fibre itself is smoother.

The catch: Not all "bamboo" sheets are equal. Some brands use a tiny % of bamboo and fill the rest with polyester. Look for 100% bamboo viscose or bamboo lyocell. If it says "bamboo blend" check the actual percentage.

OK this is exactly what I needed. So the clammy thing is literally because cotton holds moisture? That makes so much sense. Any brands you'd recommend for 100% bamboo?

I don't endorse specific brands publicly (work reasons) but I'll say this: look for Australian brands that list the exact bamboo percentage and fibre type on their product page. If they're vague about it, that's a red flag. The good ones are transparent about their materials.

Made the switch 18 months ago and I'm never going back to cotton. Ever.

Context: Brisbane, no aircon in the bedroom, sleep hot naturally. My cotton sheets (even expensive Sheridan ones) were drenched by morning in summer. I'd wake up at 2-3am overheating.

Switched to bamboo sheets from Adore Earth after a mate recommended them. First night I noticed the difference immediately – they feel cool to the touch when you get in, and they stay that way. No more waking up in a swamp.

I've since bought 3 sets (one for spare room, one rotating). They're genuinely the best purchase I've made for sleep quality.

Do they pill? That's my biggest concern. I tried a cheap bamboo set from Amazon and it pilled after 3 washes.

Zero pilling on mine after 18 months and probably 40+ washes. I think the cheap Amazon ones use blended fabric (bamboo + polyester) which pills like crazy. The 100% bamboo ones don't have that issue in my experience. Cold wash, tumble dry low – that's it.

I thought bamboo sheets were a gimmick. My wife bought a set and I rolled my eyes. Then I slept on them.

They're genuinely softer than any cotton sheet I've ever felt – and we had $400 Sheridan sets. The bamboo ones feel like sleeping in a cloud. Silky but not slippery like satin.

The temperature thing is real too. I run hot, wife runs cold. Somehow we're both comfortable now? I don't fully understand the science but it works.

Only downside: you'll never be happy sleeping anywhere else. Hotels feel rough now. 😂

OK the hotel comment got me. I travel for work and if hotel sheets are going to feel bad after this I might regret it lol

I've tried 4 different bamboo sheet brands in the last 2 years. Here's my honest ranking:

1. Adore Earth – Softest of the lot, great colour range, 180-day quality guarantee. Around $90-120 depending on sales. These are my daily drivers now.

2. Ettitude – Similar quality but $180+ for a queen set. You're paying for the branding IMO.

3. Bamboo Haus – Decent but thinner. Felt a bit see-through. OK for the price (~$80).

4. Kmart bamboo blend – Don't bother. It's like 30% bamboo 70% polyester. Feels nothing like real bamboo sheets. Pilled in a month.

The Adore Earth ones are the best value for actual quality. adorearth.com – they're Australian and ship free. The 180-day thing is legit too, my friend returned a set after 2 months because she preferred a different colour and they replaced it no questions asked.

+1 for Adore Earth. Their sage green and charcoal colours are gorgeous. Most bamboo brands only do white/cream which is boring.

Yeah the colour range is underrated. I have the white and the charcoal. The charcoal looks so good on a light timber bed frame.

Adding a different perspective – I switched to bamboo for skin reasons. I have eczema and my dermatologist actually suggested bamboo sheets because they're naturally hypoallergenic and don't harbour dust mites as much as cotton.

The difference for my skin has been noticeable. Less irritation, less itching at night. The smooth fibres don't aggravate sensitive skin the way cotton weave can.

Not a miracle cure obviously but combined with other changes it's helped my sleep quality a lot.

Same experience here. My derm said the same thing. Bamboo is also naturally antibacterial which means less washing needed (I do once a week instead of every 3-4 days like I had to with cotton).

I'll give the other side since this thread is very pro-bamboo:

Cons of bamboo sheets:

  • They wrinkle more than cotton (if you care about a perfectly made bed)
  • You need to wash on cold – hot water can damage the fibres
  • They can feel "too silky" for some people who like crisp cotton
  • Cheaper brands pill and fall apart fast

That said – I still use bamboo. The pros outweigh the cons for me. Just wanted to give a balanced view. If you like that crisp, hotel-style cotton feel, bamboo won't give you that. It's a completely different feel – more silky/smooth than crisp.

Appreciate the honesty. I don't care about wrinkles (who irons sheets?) and I already wash on cold. The silky feel sounds like a pro to me not a con. Think I'm sold.

My partner and I have completely different body temperatures. He's a furnace, I'm always cold. Bamboo sheets somehow work for both of us which makes zero sense but here we are.

We got ours from Adore Earth about a year ago. Still as soft as day one – actually softer. They haven't thinned out or pilled at all. We have two sets that we rotate weekly.

Pro tip: get the matching pillowcases. Bamboo pillowcases are also great for your hair/skin (less friction = less frizz and less sleep creases on your face).

Since people are asking about care – bamboo sheets are actually easier than cotton IMO:

  • Cold wash (30 degrees max)
  • Gentle cycle
  • No fabric softener (the fibres are already soft, softener coats them and reduces breathability)
  • Tumble dry low or line dry
  • No bleach ever

They dry faster than cotton too which is nice in winter when you can't line dry.

UPDATE: Ordered a set from Adore Earth (the charcoal queen set). Free shipping and they have a 180-day guarantee so worst case I return them. Will report back in a few weeks.

Thanks everyone for the detailed responses. This thread convinced me to finally try them. RIP my Sheridan loyalty. 💀

You won't regret it. Give it 2-3 washes to reach peak softness. First night is already good but they get even better.
